In 1957 Roberts was the first African American to graduate with a PhD from New College. His discussion of the place of Christianity in a racist society “A Black Political Theology” (1974) became a classic and remains influential today.
The student who never came Martin Luther King Jr. wrote enquiring about PhD work at New College but instead began work for his PhD at Boston University in the same year.
A formidable first – Elizabeth Hewat Elizabeth Hewat was not the first woman to study theology at New College but she was the first female BD (1926) and PhD (1934).
