First session of the New College

The very first classes for the Free Church students were held at Dr Candlish’ church in Lothian Road. When the building was ready, they moved to 80 George Street.

Robert Smith Candlish played a major part in the events of the Disruption, where he eventually became a leader in the Free Church of Scotland. He also eventually became a minister of Free St George’s, which was opened on 28 May 1843.
